We started with a group research on sustainability before deciding on what to design individually. Find the Link to the group research below.

Introduction

In this research I will explain my approach towards designing a mobile app for Recycling. My approach in making it Fun, Rewarding and easy to use.

Problem statement

Low recycling rates and inefficient waste management practices are major environmental concerns. A recycling app can increase accessibility, convenience, and information for users to improve recycling habits and find recycling facilities.

Background

Recycling is the process of collecting and processing waste materials such as paper, plastics, glass, and metals, and transforming them into new products. The concept of recycling has been around for centuries, with evidence of recycled bronze dating back to ancient Rome. However, it wasn't until the 20th century that recycling became more widespread, with governments and organisations encouraging the practice as a way to conserve natural resources and reduce waste. Today, recycling is an important part of sustainable living, helping to reduce landfill waste and conserve resources for future generations.

Background of Recycling In Africa

Recycling in Africa has been a growing industry over the past few decades, as more countries on the continent have begun to prioritise waste management and environmental sustainability. However, the recycling industry in Africa is still facing a number of challenges, including limited infrastructure, insufficient government support, and low public awareness. Despite these challenges, there are a number of successful recycling initiatives and businesses across the continent, which are helping to create jobs, reduce waste, and promote a more sustainable future for Africa.

Hypothesis

A recycling app that includes features such as smart bins, DIY tutorials, contacting recycling trucks, and rewards and challenges will increase user engagement and promote sustainable behaviour. Users who are able to easily identify recycling opportunities and track their progress through the app, as well as receive incentives through rewards and challenges, will be more motivated to recycle and adopt sustainable habits in their daily lives. Additionally, the app's feature of contacting recycling trucks will provide a convenient and efficient way for users to dispose of their recyclables, reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfills.

Why

we can create a more sustainable future. By making recycling accessible and convenient through technology, we can encourage users to adopt eco-friendly behaviours and reduce waste. By offering incentives and tracking progress, we can motivate users to stay engaged and committed to recycling over time. Ultimately, our goal is to empower individuals to make a positive impact on the environment and promote a culture of sustainability for generations to come.
